About

The Davis Journal of Legal Studies is an interdisciplinary, undergraduate legal journal founded in 2020 at University of California, Davis. The DJLS was founded due to the recognized need of publication opportunities in researching topics in law and legal studies at an undergraduate level. It is an academic journal that gives students an opportunity to pursue legal studies beyond a lecture hall, while simultaneously providing experience in the publication, research, and editorial processes.

As a student-led legal studies publication, our mission is to increase access to legal studies by making legal research widely and freely available. We also seek to empower undergraduate students by platforming their legal research and analysis.

Our operational definition of the term legal studies is “the interdisciplinary, academic study of legal concepts, institutions, and processes”. This definition encompasses many facets of law, legality, and justice; we believe this definition allows for plentiful and diverse topics to be included in the journal’s volumes.

We publish volumes of the journal annually. Volume I was published in Spring 2021. Our latest edition—Volume V, was published in Spring 2025 and is our largest volume to date.

Our upcoming edition Volume VI is now accepting submissions until Dec. 31, 2025! This year’s theme focuses on the following topic: patterns in the legal world.
